New Generation iPods Unveiled

In a special press release today, Steve Jobs has unveiled the new generation of Apple iPods.  The new iPod touch and iPod shuffle have already hit the stores in some centres, and the iPod nano is set to follow in the next few days.
The biggest news for the new generation iPod touch is the inclusion of a camera, which many consumers have been crying out for for some time.  The camera can be used for both HD video recording and still photo capture, and there’s even a second camera on the front face – Nintendo DSi style.  This inclusion helps to
flesh out what is already a very cool machine, with new models selling from $229 for the 8GB and up to $399 for the 64GB version.
The new iPod shuffle remains tiny but now comes with an added click wheel.  This is a great user friendly feature that does add to the appeal of this product, but it is an interesting inclusion considering it is now only the second iPod that has the classic click wheel interface – along with the iPod classic.
This is a great choice for people who are looking for an exercise friendly music player, even if it is a little difficult to get excited at its no-screen design.  The new 2GB iPod shuffle is also only $49, making it by far the cheapest iPod option.
The iPod nano is the third new release in the iPod range, featuring a shrunken touch screen that now has multi-touch capabilities.  While the multi-touch features are definitely welcome, this 6th generation iPod nano is in many ways a strange permutation of the 5th generation design.  With no video capture or playback like that featured on the 5th gen model, this iPod nano is in many ways a step backward.
Sure – the new multi-touch user interface is great, and even rotatable, and it may be small and cute – but isn’t that what the iPod shuffle is supposed to be for.  At $149 for the 8GB model and $179 for the 16GB, it is priced exactly like the 5th generation model but is not as good in many respects.  All three new iPods will be on the shelves by next week, with many stores already stocking the iPod touch and iPod shuffle.
